Start Here: What You Can Expect from Substack

Stories, tips, and the reality of life abroad from a long-time expat and nomad.

Hi all - Kat here from A Way Abroad.

I quickly wanted to introduce myself to any new faces and then give a little idea of what you can expect from here going forward and why Substack is better than traditional socials…at least according to my mental health.

I’ve been abroad since 2013 & A Way Abroad has been around since 2019.

My newest backyard, Trieste

Since moving abroad, I’ve lived for at least a year in Ecuador, South Korea, Vietnam, and now I call Italy home.

I’ve also spent at least 3 months in Panama, Guatemala, France, Bosnia, Montenegro, and Albania. There’s been a lot of adventures squeezed in between but those are the places I’ve lived longer than a typical vacation allows for.

I started A Way Abroad all those years ago to show you that there’s not just one way abroad like I initially thought but an infinite combination of countries, jobs, visas, and lifestyles to choose from.

I want to be clear that this platform is not taking over the website, the website is still my baby. I still aim to publish 1 new article a week either by me but more often than not by a woman in our community.

If this idea of moving abroad is new and you’re not entirely sure where to even begin, I really recommend starting with the site. Browse, read other stories, and feed yourself with some ideas. There might be some things in there that you never considered but would actually be a great fit.

Anyways, Substack!

My goal here is to use it as I was using traditional emails - as a way to share stories, peaks into my life in Italy, and practical tips on how to either move abroad or settle in once you’ve arrived.

Living abroad is not all sunshine and rainbows, visas exist after all, so I’m here to help you through the good, bad, annoying, and super fun.

If your goal is to move abroad, this is the perfect step in the right direction.

You can expect weekly emails as normal, just via Substack. That means you can read everything I send in your inbox or in the Substack App or desktop site. Your choice!

Since Substack offers a lot more than just text, I’ll also dabble in recording these stories for those that prefer to listen and I plan to go live here each month with either Q&As from you or to dive deeper on a certain aspect of moving abroad. We can pick and choose the video topics based on what you’re looking for!

A thing I really love about the platform is that it lets you see the full archive of posts so if you subscribed today, you can see posts from days, months, or even years ago. Just note that the full archive access is only avalaible to premium subscribers.

Tl;dr here’s whats to come:

  • Weekly tips/stories (free)

  • Monthly summary of newest articles on the site (free)

  • Full archive access (premium)

  • Podcast version of stories (premium)

  • Monthly video Q&A or topic deep dive (premium)

You may have noticed that I haven’t been posting much on socials. And that’s simply because I don’t really like social media. I never really have but I felt like I had to be there. Other than watching my friend’s stories, I try not to spend too much time there.

Plus, above all, I prefer writing and that’s the heart of Substack.

Here, we’ll still get community. You can leave comments and ask questions and can even create private chats only with our subscribers. Have a question for me or the community in general, ask away! As of now, there aren’t any bots in the comments so that’s pretty cool too.

With that, let’s get you abroad.
